Friedrich Gentz was a quintessential rationalist who lived through a period of revolutionary change and upheaval in Europe. From the start of the French Revolution to the consolidation of the Concert of Europe in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, Gentz was passionately involved in the action that unfolded on the European stage. Gentz achieved fame in his lifetime, becoming known as the Secretary of Europe during the course of the Congress of Vienna. Writing incessantly about the developments in European politics as they occurred, Gentz believed not only in the importance of theorizing about international politics, but also in the inextricable link between political theory and diplomatic practice.
